Severe Storms & Hail Warning: What to Expect in SEQ This Weekend (2025)

Storm warnings once again grip South-East Queensland as severe weather threatens the region. But here’s where it gets controversial — while many are bracing for more storms and potential hail, some experts argue that the overall impact may not be as severe as forecasts predict, sparking debate on the accuracy of weather warnings.

Rain has reclaimed parts of southeastern Queensland following recent storms, and residents are on high alert for the possibility of hail on Saturday afternoon. This comes after a tumultuous night of weather on Friday, when storms swept through the area. These storms, which struck Brisbane around 6 pm, brought nearly 22 millimeters of rain within just two hours — from 5 pm to 7 pm. At their peak, over 3,200 properties lost power, illustrating the storm’s disruptive power.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a warning on Saturday afternoon, noting that severe thunderstorms forming west of Brisbane are moving through southeastern Queensland. According to BOM, these storms pose risks of damaging winds, large hailstones, and heavy rainfall, which could result in flash floods.

Specifically, the BOM's warning indicated that thunderstorms are advancing towards the east and northeast, with affected areas including Maroochydore, Caloundra, regions north of Kilkivan, Maroon Dam, west of Toogoolawah, northeast of Texas, Cunninghams Gap, and Clifton. By 6 pm, areas like Noosa Heads, Pomona, and Rathdowney are expected to experience storm activity, while by 6:30 pm, places such as Stanthorpe, Boonah, Laidley, and Kilcoy could also be impacted.

Within the Lockyer Valley, significant rainfall was recorded — Mount Berryman received 61 millimeters before 3:45 pm, Mulgowie 55 millimeters, and Rockside 52 millimeters shortly before 3:45 pm, all pointing to the intense storm activity in the area.

Senior meteorologist Angus Hines highlighted that a particularly volatile zone stretching from the Sunshine Coast to Moree in New South Wales is under threat. He warned that this region is most likely to experience the fiercest weather, including potentially giant hailstones larger than five centimeters and destructive winds exceeding 120 kilometers per hour.

Hines explained that the areas at risk span from western Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, into the hinterlands, across Toowoomba, and down into the Darling Downs, extending into the north-western slopes of New South Wales — underscoring the widespread danger.

Another leading meteorologist, Miriam Bradbury, reassured the public that the storm activity should ease after the weekend. She noted, “Storms will clear out fairly quickly from the east,” and added that although some rain and storms might still occur in southern Queensland and coastal parts of New South Wales on Monday, the weather is expected to settle into clearer, drier conditions by Tuesday. This stable pattern, she predicts, will persist across most of Australia's eastern coast for the upcoming week.

So, as Queensland braces for more intense weather, the big question remains: how accurate and necessary are these alerts, and what lessons should we take from this ongoing cycle of storm warnings? Are we over-preparing, or is preparedness our best defense against nature’s unpredictability? Share your thoughts below — the debate on weather forecasting accuracy and community response has never been more relevant.
