Imagine waking up tomorrow with over $50 million in your bank account. Sounds like a dream, right? But what if that dream turned into a hilarious, chaotic, and utterly unexpected nightmare? That's the core question explored in Rain Rannu's new film, New Money, and it’s a question that might make you rethink everything you thought you knew about wealth.
New Money, the fifth feature from Estonian writer-director-producer Rain Rannu (known for his previous work, Free Money), isn’t just a comedy; it's a thought experiment disguised as entertainment. It dares to ask: what really happens when ordinary people are suddenly thrust into extraordinary wealth? We're talking about 50 million euros, which translates to roughly $58 million USD at current exchange rates. That's enough money to solve a lot of problems, but as New Money hilariously illustrates, it can also create a whole lot more.
The film recently made its international debut at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF), specifically in the Baltic Competition segment. The premiere was a hit, drawing a large crowd and generating plenty of laughter. This suggests Rannu has struck a chord with audiences, tapping into a universal fascination with wealth and its discontents.
Returning to reprise their roles from Free Money are Märt Pius and Steffi Pähn, playing the couple Taavi and Liisa. They're joined by Ivo Uukkivi, Elina Masing, Edgar Vunš, and Keith Siilats. The film is a production of Tallifornia, Rannu and Tõnu Hiielaid’s production company, with Baltic Crime handling international sales.
So, what's the story? According to the synopsis, Taavi, a modest IT wizard, and Liisa, a humble teacher, agree to a tabloid interview in an attempt to promote financial literacy among young people. Sounds innocent enough, right? But here's where it gets controversial... Their openness backfires spectacularly. They're bombarded with anonymous insults, bizarre requests, indecent proposals, and, to top it off, a scheming con artist enters the picture. Taavi soon regrets the day he became a Bitcoin millionaire. It begs the question: is any amount of money worth sacrificing your peace of mind?
Rannu and his team have shared anecdotes from the film's production, including some amusing stories from their time shooting in Miami, a location that plays a significant role in the movie. The opulent backdrop of Miami contrasts sharply with the couple's initial humble lifestyle, amplifying the comedic and chaotic elements of their newfound wealth.
While New Money features characters from Free Money, Rannu emphasizes that it's not a direct sequel. "When I made the last one, I really liked those two characters, and I thought that maybe it would be great to spend some more time with them," he explained. "So I wrote something, sent it to the actors, asked them, ‘Is this a thing? Should we do it?’ And they said: ‘Sure, yeah, absolutely.’ And then it kind of happened. So it was a very organic process."
Rannu also discussed his role as co-editor of the film, stating, "I really enjoy the process, because in editing, you can make it or break it. And there are so many things that you can do in editing, especially all those micro nuances – what to focus on more, what to focus on less." Editing, in many ways, is the final rewrite, where the story is truly shaped and refined. And this is the part most people miss... the artistry of taking footage and crafting a cohesive, compelling narrative.
The film explores the various headaches that arise from the couple's sudden fortune, leading Rannu to conclude that one of the central themes is simply: "One of the themes of this movie was ‘more money, more problems’". This isn't a groundbreaking revelation, but New Money promises to explore this age-old adage with a fresh, comedic perspective.
Could we see a third film set in this universe? Rannu hinted at the possibility, saying, "A couple of good ideas are floating around already," including potential stories focusing on other characters introduced in New Money. This suggests that the world Rannu has created is rich with possibilities for future exploration.
Now, after hearing all this, what do you think? Does more money inevitably lead to more problems? Is there an amount of wealth that would actually make your life worse? And perhaps most importantly, if you suddenly came into a fortune like Taavi and Liisa, what would you do differently? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
